Camille Herron, US multiple and National ultra distance record holder, has set a new women’s 48 hour record at the Sri Chinmoy 48 hour track race at the AIS athletics track in Canberra.
At 9am today, with one hour of the race still to run, she had completed 425 kilometres at the Sri Chinmoy 48 Hour race at the AIS in Bruce – and was still running. Herron completed 239.2 km in the first 24 hours.
The previous record was 411.458 km set only six weeks ago by British athlete Jo Zakrwzeski in Taiwan on 11-12 February.
Herron passed the record just after 45 hours into the race and this morning was pushing the record out further in the final three hours. The race concluded at 10am Canberra time. Herron also holds the women’s world 100 mile and 24 hour records. She was on the track the whole 48 hours except for short power naps.
En route she also set a new North American and American National record when surpassing the existing mark of 391.963 km set by Marisa Lizak.
All records are subject to ratification by the International Association of Ultra Runners.
The 48 hour is just one race within the Sri Chinmoy 48 hour Track Festival. The event also included races at the 24 hour, 12 hour and 6 hour distance as well as a Midnight Marathon.
Several Australian national records have also been set by various runners, including the M70+ record for 48 hours, and M50 records for 6 hours and 12 hours.
