The Canberra Airport is welcoming back passengers for non-essential travel with flights resuming between some capital cities without restrictions.
The airport announced today (Tuesday 2 June) that travel between Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne had resumed as of 1 June.
Canberra Airport’s Head of Aviation, Michael Thomson, said he was pleased to see domestic travel open between these capital cities.
“We are very excited people can now fly without restrictions between these state capitals and we look forward to the airlines increasing the number of flights they have on offer in the coming weeks,” he said.
Currently, only one flight per day to Sydney and one to Melbourne with carrier Qantas is listed as departing on Canberra Airport’s website.
Mr Thomson also added that high standards of hygiene would be maintained through Canberra Airport, including further use of temperature screening technology introduced to the airport at the beginning of May.
“We are maintaining our high levels of hygiene at the airport, social distancing, sanitiser stations, touchless entry to the carparks and terminal, and of course our temperature screening at security.”
Departing flights direct to Brisbane are also available from the Canberra Airport with Qantas, however restrictions will apply as Queensland borders remain closed.
“Travel to Brisbane is also permitted from Canberra Airport if you obtain permission from the Queensland Government, and we hope to be able to open up travel to and from South Australia and Tasmania in the near future.”
The news comes after both the Western Australia and Queensland governments maintained their positions on keeping their borders closed on Monday, despite criticism from the Federal Government.
South Australia’s borders also remain closed, as all travellers entering the state are required to self-isolate for 14 days.
International travel remains off the cards at this time, despite talks of opening a “Trans-Tasman flight bubble” between Australia and New Zealand later this year.
