Canberra Airport’s green credentials soar

In an ACT-first, a conscience-free workplace in Majura Park, which is powered by renewables, has won a green stamp of approval for its sustainability and environmental credentials.

Canberra Airport’s base building at 25 Catalina Drive, Majura Park, has been awarded the highest possible rating of six stars under the Green Star Design & As Built certification.

The fully electric building boasts a façade with sun blades, roof-mounted solar arrays and landscaping using native species. Employees also get cycle racks and shower/change room amenities, but what really helped the building win its green credentials was its ongoing recycling arrangements and composting programs.

Richard Snow, Head of Property at Canberra Airport, says Canberra Airport has been a member of the Green Building Council of Australia for 20 years.

“Innovation and environmental sustainability are deeply ingrained in our DNA,” Mr Snow says.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) states that Canberra Airport achieved every targeted point, surpassing the requirements for a six-star rating by an impressive 12 points.

GBCA CEO Davina Rooney calls Canberra Airport’s base building a “benchmark breaking building”.

“It is all-electric, powered by renewables, well connected with bike paths and transport, and within beautiful surrounds. This is a building Green Building Council of Australia is proud of and one the people of Canberra should be proud of too,” Ms Rooney says.

Canberra Airport also won Australia’s first Five Star Green Star rating in 2005 for its 8 Brindabella Circuit project.
