Thirsty to return to the diamond after a disrupted 2020/21 season, the Canberra Cavalry will kick off their 2021/22 ABL season with a home series against reigning premiers Melbourne Aces from 18 November.
The Cavalry and the Aces squared off 14 times – including once in the playoffs – during the COVID-impacted 2020/21 season, with the Aces winning their last outing in the playoffs 19-4.
The Aces went on to win the 2020/21 ABL Championship, meaning that a new-look Canberra Cavalry will face off against the best of the best to start their 2021/22 campaign.
“We feel that there’s unfinished business with the Aces, given the way we had to withdraw last season, so you can guarantee that we as a club are excited to face up against them nice and early,” Cavs general manager, Sunny Singh, said.
Singh welcomed the challenge of facing the defending champs, saying the squad was excited at the prospect of coming up against one of the competition favourites early.
“The Aces have set a new standard for the league in recent seasons and coming up against them early will give us a great indication of how the new squad stacks up.” he said.
As the competition builds toward the season, the Cavalry are building their roster around their strong local talent pool, having already locked in several local favourites as well as some interstate acquisitions.
In a statement, the Canberra Cavalry flagged they are in the process of locking in “exciting overseas prospects”, and that fans can expect signing announcements over the next few weeks.
“We’re excited about the roster being built for this season.” Singh said.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that this Cavalry squad will continue our appearances at the business end of the season.
The 2021/22 ABL program sees a return to a 10-week home-and-away slate featuring 40 games, including 20 at home, per team.
Following their home series against the Aces, the Cavs will host Brisbane, Sydney and Perth in December 2021 and Adelaide in January 2022.
Canberra Cavalry and Sydney will continue their battle for the Hume Highway Cup with the second leg at Blacktown potentially playoff-fate deciding in the final round of the regular-season.
All six teams will be in action on New Year’s Day.
The final day of the regular season is scheduled for January 23 and the playoff format will be locked in shortly.
Broadcast details for the 2021/22 ABL season will be announced at a later date.
