Canberra COVID-19 update: four patients in ICU

Four Canberra COVID-19 patients are currently in ICU, while overnight four new cases were confirmed, bringing the ACT’s total to 87.

There are currently eight COVID-19 patients in Canberra hospitals, down from nine yesterday.

The new cases consist of one male and three females, aged between 21 and 60. All of the new cases are linked to overseas travel, including cruise ships, with one earlier case still under investigation by ACT Health.

ACT Health advise there remains no evidence of community transmission in the ACT.

A total of 11 cases have recovered from COVID-19 and have been released from self-isolation. The rest are isolating at home with ACT Health support.

There have been 4,931 negative COVID-19 tests in the ACT to date.

Reduction in total confirmed cases

After further testing, another Canberra COVID-19 case has been determined to not have the virus, and has been removed from the ACT’s total.

As a result, the total for the ACT has only increased by three today despite recording four new confirmed cases. This is the third case to be removed from the ACT’s statistics.

ACT Health has taken a very precautionary approach to classifying indeterminate tests that indicate a probable positive result.

In cases where the indeterminate tests indicate it is more likely to be positive than not, the individual has been classified as a confirmed case until further testing can provide a more definitive result. As with other confirmed cases, thorough contact tracing is undertaken.

When further testing ultimately determines the individual to not have COVID-19, the case is reclassified as a negative result.

The ACT Government’s new dedicated COVID-19 website contains more information about the health and economic response to the pandemic in the ACT.
