Canberra Daily’s 2023 in review: August

The final month of winter took us out of this world and back down to earth as a Canberra photographer captured a shot of what appeared to be a UFO.

The federal government was called out for being too European in its agricultural management proposals, while sustainability and accessibility were on the ACT government’s agenda as they unveiled new public housing in Calwell.

Canberrans confessed that they had been feeling quite lonely, and one local took to Facebook to offload his ‘priceless’ memorabilia.

Canberra astro-photographer captures incredible image in our night sky

Award-winning astro-photographer Ari Rex captured an image of an unidentified flying object in the night sky above Gundaroo on 14 July. While there were a few speculations as to what it could have been, there’s no definitive answer. Mr Rex said it was visible for around ten minutes before disappearing and is certain it wasn’t a cloud.

In other space news this month, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex located Voyager 2 after it lost contact with NASA.

New ‘accessible and sustainable’ public housing in Calwell

Locals were given a look at the newest public housing dwellings built for people with disabilities. Working with disability organisations, the ACT Government ensured that the seven-star energy-rated dwellings would be accessible for a range of abilities. The houses – 22 two-bedroom homes and eight three-bedroom homes – welcomed their residents in September.

Museums reject Canberra Beatles fan’s memorabilia donation

Local musician and Beatles enthusiast Dallas Atkins took to social media to sell some of his incredible collection of the famous boy band memorabilia after museums across Australia knocked him back. Mr Atkin began collecting in the 1970s and values the collection at $80,000. It includes ‘priceless’ items such as original 1964 autographs from George Harrison and Paul McCartney.
