Canberra district has best Shiraz two years in a row

Today, a 2019 Shiraz by Canberra Districtโ€™s own Lerida Estate took home top trophies for the second year in a row at the NSW Wine Awards.

The honours were given at 1pm during an exclusive awards presentation luncheon at ICC Sydney.

At a modest $28 price tag, the 2019 Shiraz snagged the titles of โ€˜Best Shirazโ€™ and โ€˜Best Dry Redโ€™ in Show, adding to their previous win of โ€˜Best Shirazโ€™ and โ€˜Best Red โ€˜in show at the 2020 NSW Wine Awards.

Nestled at the foot of the Cullerin Range at Lake George, Lerida Estate Winery uses the cool climate site, low yielding vines, and minimal intervention to produce their medal-winning wines.

Also from the Canberra District, Shaw Winesโ€™ 2018 Reserve Merriman Cabernet ($65 a bottle) was awarded Best Cabernet Sauvignon.

Among the 21 Trophies that were presented to the stateโ€™s best wines, the ultimate trophy of โ€˜NSW Governorโ€™s 2021 Best in Showโ€™ was presented by the Governor herself to Hunter Valleyโ€™s Silkman Wines for their 2014 Reserve Semillon.

Chair of Judges, Mr Nick Spencer said, โ€œTwo wines went head-to-head this year resulting in a very close contestโ€.

โ€œSkilled wine maker, Hunter Valleyโ€™s Liz Silkman has produced a wine that is remarkably fresh for a seven-year-old wine, while still offering an incredible complexity,โ€ ultimately scoring the win.

The most esteemed award of the night was the retrospective 2020 Graham Gregory Award, for services to the NSW wine industry, which Mr Spencer named โ€œour industryโ€™s top citationโ€.

The recipient, Liz Riley from Vitibit, founded a viticulture consultancy, improving vineyard sustainability, climate change adaption and fruit quality for growers across the board in NSW, nationally and internationally.

Ms Riley, the first female recipient of the Graham Gregory, joined by Ms Silkman, winemaker of the 2021 NSW Wine of The Year, celebrated a great year for female professionals within the NSW wine industry.
