Canberra is home to the world’s biggest homes, survey shows

Surprisingly, Canberra has trumped the number one spot on a global study – we’re the world capital for the largest average home size.

It’s not just Canberra with the largest homes in the world because Australia is the top nation globally for the biggest homes, with a median size of 188.2sqm.

Apparently, everything is bigger down under.

United Kingdom company Buildworld analysed house and apartment listings in the national capital cities of 72 countries throughout 2022 and calculated the median home size for each city.

Canberra recorded a median property footprint of 256.3sqm. By comparison, the average home in Washington D.C. is one-third of the size of an average home in the ACT.

Canberran homeowners have 560 per cent more floor space than in the Russian capital Moscow, which averages 45.5sqm and is last on the list of 72 cities, and more than double that of homes in Wellington in New Zealand, at 123sqm.

The capital of Egypt, Cairo, comes in second on the list, but Canberra homes are still 36 per cent larger than the north African city.

Critics suggest Canberra’s trend of building massive homes is “out of control” and developers adding extra rooms are increasing the city’s and nation’s carbon and property footprint.

Canberra architect Shannon Battison said, “We’re leaving vast members of the community behind because not everyone can or should afford a huge house.

“And lots of us who can’t afford these huge houses but feel the need to build them because that’s what everybody builds, are building them really badly.”
