Canberra in safe hands with new fire officers

Ten ACT Fire & Rescue firefighters graduated today. These newly promoted Station Officers have completed a four-month development program, and will now lead their fire crews.

“Every ACT Fire & Rescue appliance has a station officer assigned to the vehicle,” said the ACT Emergency Services Agency. “They’re the leader of the team, and often the first on-scene. It’s the station officer’s job to oversee the incident and manage crews.”

The officers will act as Incident Managers for all types of emergencies, and manage and maintain station facilities, equipment and administrative functions, said ACTF&R Chief Officer Matthew Mavity.

“I am proud to congratulate and welcome our newly promoted Station Officers, who have demonstrated the diverse skills and experiences required to undertake the varied work our firefighters do,” Chief Officer Mavity said.

ACT Fire & Rescue’s newest station officers are Matthew Barrett, Matthew Buchtmann, Jake Cannon, Peter Fitzpatrick, Peter Ingram, Kate Judd, Jesse Matthews, Dale McCormack, Mate Peric, and Chad Porter.

Mr Mavity said the organisation prided itself on continued training and upskilling firefighters and providing opportunities within the service.

Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services, said the community would be in safe hands with the new Station Officers.

“The ACT Government is committed to providing Canberra with highly trained and skilled firefighters, who go above and beyond to protect and support our community,” Mr Gentleman said.

“Our new Station Officers demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities and all the necessary skills to be the next generation of leaders within ACTF&R.”

Station Officers will begin their new roles over the coming weeks.
