Canberra man claims $11 million lotto prize

A Canberra man said he was looking forward to buying his parents and himself a house, after discovering he was the winner of an $11 million Oz Lotto draw.

The ticket, purchased at Charnwood Newsagency was the only division one winning entry in draw 1390 on Tuesday, 6 October.

The winner described nearly falling out of his car when he discovered the ticket was his.

“I don’t even know what to say. Wow. I am freaking out. This doesn’t feel real! I think I’ll only believe it when I see the money in my bank account,” he said.

“I had the ticket in my wallet and I just pulled it out and scanned it on the app. When I saw $11 million appear on my screen I just about fell out of the car.”

The Lotto put a call out on Wednesday for purchasers to check their tickets after it was discovered the winner was unregistered and there was no way of contacting them.

The Canberra man said he was in disbelief and couldn’t wait to share the news with his parents.

“I’m always hoping for $1,000 or $2,000 or so to pay some bills. I can’t wait to call my mum and tell her as soon as I get off the phone,” he said.

“My parents have struggled forever so I can’t wait to tell them that I will be buying them a house and then I’ll be able to buy myself a house as well. I can’t comprehend what that will be like.

“Oh my god. I can’t believe it. This is the beginning of a new life for me, that’s for sure!”

Charnwood Newsagency owner Stephen Dowling said he was pleased to know the prize had gone to a local customer of the store.

“It’s incredible to see this life-changing prize go to one of our local and regular customers,” he said.

“It’s exciting for everyone to see these kind of wins happen in the community. Congratulations to him. It sounds like he will really enjoy his prize!”
