Canberra organisation recognised; 5000 smartphones given to domestic violence survivors

Canberra-based Women’s Support Network, WESNET has been announced as one of 10 finalists for the 2022 HESTA Impact Awards – recognised for going above and beyond in supporting the community.

The list of 2022 finalists, who are running to share a $30,000 prize pool, boast initiatives such as an app to combat communication challenges with the elderly due to mask wearing, a program to support bereaved children, and work to reduce social isolation, poverty, and ill health for young mothers.

An independent judging panel will select the Team Innovation, Outstanding Organisation, and Individual Distinction category winners, to be announced on Wednesday 23 February at a live event and broadcast on awards.hesta.tv.

WESTNET Incorporated is a finalist for the Outstanding Organisation award, largely recognised for its Safety Net Australia Service.

The service focuses on the intersection of technology and violence against women.  Its partnerships with Telstra and Uber proved innovative in supporting women’s domestic violence services during the pandemic.

In the 2020-2021 financial year, in partnership with Telstra, the Safe Connections project distributed 5000 smartphones and credit to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

In partnership with Uber, the WESNET Rides Program provided nearly 2000 free rides for survivors to get to essential appointments and deliver nappies, food, and other essential items.

This service is now closed due to the ongoing public health situation.

WESNET continues to provide education on tech safety, both to at-risk persons and domestic violence practitioners.

In 2015, 98 per cent of domestic violence services reported having clients experiencing technology abuse, including stalking through devices, abusive messages, or threats to share intimate images.

The HESTA Impact Awards recognise WESNET’s efforts to protect and educate at-risk parties, in line with the Awards following the blueprint of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
