Canberra records one new COVID death, 1601 cases

Canberra has recorded one new COVID death and 1,601 cases in the latest update.

The death is a woman in her 50s at Canberra Hospital and takes the ACT’s total COVID-19 death toll to 19.

The 1,601 new infections is a daily record for the ACT. 878 of the new cases came from PCR tests while 723 were from rapid antigen tests.

The number of patients in hospital has jumped to 52, four are in intensive care with two requiring ventilation.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the ACT is now 3,205.

Canberra has now amassed 23,761 total COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020.

There are now 20,537 people that have recovered from the virus in Canberra and 19 deaths.

The ACT has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country, with 98.6 per cent of those aged 12 and over having had two doses.

Of those residents aged 18 and over, 30.5 per cent have received their booster shot, while 26.8 per cent of residents aged 5-11 have received one dose.

Meanwhile, the territory government received a shipment of 50,000 rapid antigen tests on the weekend.

The new tests will be handed out at clinics across the territory and to health workers.

But the Holt testing clinics remains closed due to ongoing supply issues of PCR tests.

Other clinics are operating as normal.

COVID across Australia

NSW recorded 48,768 new infections and 17 deaths.

Of the deaths, one person was aged in their 60s, four people were aged in their 70s, nine people were aged in their 80s, and three people were in their 90s.

Of the 17 people who died; 14 people were vaccinated against COVID-19, one person had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and two people were not vaccinated. 

In Victoria, 22,429 new COVID-19 infections were reported along with six deaths.

Queensland reported 15,122 new cases and seven deaths of two people in their 80s and five in their 90s.

Of the seven deaths; five were double vaccinated and two were unvaccinated.

Tasmania recorded 1,037 new infections with seven people in hospital being treated for virus symptoms.
