Canberra Region Rugby League draw released

Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) Cup has released its draw for the 2020 competition, with the committee also deciding on a name change for this year’s season.

The Blumers CRRL Cup will replace the Blumers Canberra Raiders Cup for this season only, covering the First and Reserve Grade competitions as well as the Women’s League Tag.

CRRL Chairman, Gary Green, said the name change was a representation of the changes in this year’s competition due to COVID-19.

“The Canberra Raiders Cup itself was ‘null and voided’ by the committee in keeping with the prevailing challenges clubs have had to come to grips with in participating in competitions in this COVID-affected environment,” he said.

“By renaming the Cup for this season to the CRRL Cup, it acknowledges that the competition for 2020 is a totally amateur competition and that there are changed circumstances for the season.”

Four teams will be participating in each of the three leagues, as the 10-week season kicks off from 25 July.

Finals for the competitions will be played on 26 and 27 September.

The George Tooke Shield and Katrina Fanning Shield competition names remain in place.

Mr Green thanked teams for their support of the competition, and said he was looking forward to the Raiders U20 team participating in this year’s First Grade Blumers CCRL Cup.

“In many ways, the players will be playing in a unique competition in extraordinary circumstances and the CRRL and rugby league appreciate their commitment to the game itself.

“Having the Raiders Under 20s team participating brings a very different element to the CRRL competition along with the Woden Valley Rams, Gungahlin Bulls and Queanbeyan Blues.”

The University of Canberra Stars men’s and women’s teams will participate in the CRRL Cup Reserve Grade and Women’s League Tag competitions, instead of the George Tooke Shield.
