Canberra Royals rugby celebrate First Nations players

Wallabies legend Glen Ella will join Canberra Royals Rugby Union Club this Saturday at their First Nations Round, for the second consecutive year.

The Canberra Royals will play the Vikings from 10.30am to 5pm at Phillip Enclosed Oval.

The event celebrates First Nations players and supporters, and their contributions to the club and the wider rugby community.

Glen Ella played as a rugby union fullback for Randwick, Manly, and NSW, and represented Australia in games against Scotland, Italy, Canada, and Fiji. He was Wallabies assistant coach during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa; a technical adviser to the Brumbies; and coached the Australian Sevens.

“Glen Ella’s presence at the event highlights the importance of this round and provides an inspiring figure for our players and fans,” a club spokesperson said. “His involvement underscores our ongoing efforts to connect with and honour the rich heritage and talent of First Nations people in rugby.”

2024 marks the club’s 75th anniversary, and the first full year of the implementation of the Canberra Royals Rugby First Nations Statement and Action Plan.

“Our First Nations Statement and Action Plan have been a cornerstone of our commitment to reconciliation,” club president Dr Jim Taylor said.

“We are dedicated to building a supportive environment where our First Nations players can thrive both on and off the field, and we are grateful for the unwavering support of our sponsors in achieving these goals.”

The First Nations Round is sponsored by Calleo Indigenous, the Corroboree Group, and Yara.

“Their ongoing commitment plays a vital role in the development and success of our First Nations players both on and off the field,” a club spokesperson said.

Join Canberra Royals Rugby Club this Saturday at the First Nations Round to celebrate the incredible contributions of their First Nations players, and enjoy a day filled with rugby excellence, community spirit, and cultural recognition.
