Canberra sport at a glance: Government support

Government support for sports

The ACT Government announced on 17 April that it will support Canberra’s sports sector through the challenges of COVID-19 with funding and relief equivalent to $3.3 million. This includes an immediate financial injection of $700,000 across ACT peak sport and recreation bodies and early access to approximately $1.5 million through the 2021 Sport and Recreation Grants Program for the 28 triennially funded organisations. Government sportsground hire fees will be waived for the winter season and for existing bookings from mid-March, estimated at $616,000. This is in addition to a six-month waiver of rent and hire fees for community groups using ACT Government properties, which had already provided an $80,000 rental reduction for relevant sporting organisations. Recovery of all outstanding invoice payments due for ACT Government sportsground hire fees has also been suspended.

Kanga Cup cancelled

Due to government restrictions on all non-essential interstate and international travel, the Kanga Cup organising committee has made the decision to cancel the 2020 event, which was scheduled to be held in Canberra on 5-10 July. Dates for the 2021 Kanga Cup are 4-9 July.

Cycling series heads online

The 2020 Cycling Australia National Road Series will hit the virtual world via the online cycling platform Zwift from 2 May. The NRS will feature six races on varying courses, with six-rider men’s and women’s teams set to battle it out with their on-road rivals in the virtual reality competition. Each round will be live-streamed across Zwift and the NRS Facebook page and will feature live commentary and special guests.
