Canberra tech firm seeks locals to train driver safety software

Canberra-based tech company Seeing Machines is recruiting local drivers with a valid licence to help train AI algorithms for its Driver Monitoring System (DMS) road safety software.

Seeing Machines’ DMS technology is used by the world’s biggest car manufacturers around the world, such as General Motors and Mercedes Benz. As part of its continued development of safety features, the successful technology exporter needs the help of local drivers in real-world situations to train its AI algorithms that add safety and convenience for all vehicle users.

Seeing Machines relies on naturalistic and simulated data to develop and enhance its world-leading technology, and to refine an expanding range of features which are being built into cars today.

The capture of real-world data enables the DMS to work for all kinds of people, in all kinds of situations, across a vast array of vehicles, to enhance safety. As a result, the company needs to recruit drivers of diverse age, gender, demographic and ethnic backgrounds.

The company is calling for Canberra drivers to participate in a range of paid data collection programs, normally based at its headquarters in Fyshwick.

“Seeing Machines’ DMS technology is vital to improving safety for vehicle occupants and determining the status of driver and passengers in the car,” said Mike Lenné, Chief Science and Innovation Officer, Seeing Machines.

“We exist to get people home safely and that relies on having a robust and sophisticated technology, which can only be achieved using real humans to train the technology.”

The technology spans the critical measurement of where a driver is looking, through to classification of their cognitive state as it applies to accident risk.

A global company founded in the ACT in 2000, Seeing Machines is an industry leader in vision-based monitoring technology that enables machines to see, understand and assist people.

The company has offices in Australia, USA, Europe and Asia, and supplies technology solutions and services to industry leaders in each market.
