Canberra United have added two more to their growing Westfield W-League side, locking in Nicki Flannery and Bianca Galic as the sixth and seventh squad members for the upcoming season.
Flannery will re-join the Canberra side after spending her 2019/20 season with the Newcastle Jets, following on from 36 appearances with United since her debut in 2015.
“Given the year that has been, I wanted to come home. The club means so much to me and there is no better feeling than representing your hometown,” she said.
“The feeling of playing for Canberra United is irreplaceable. I look forward to putting all my energy into making sure that Canberra becomes a successful club again this season.”
The winger has scored five goals for Canberra United and was nominated for NAB Young Player of the Year in her second season.
Twenty-one-year-old Galic joins the Canberra side for the first time, after a notable season for Sydney University in the 2020 National Premier Leagues NSW Women’s competition.
The mid-fielder has two goals to her name from the 2020 season, and said she was excited to be joining the Canberra side.
“The experience of playing with Canberra United really excites me. The fact that I will get to play and train against players I haven’t before will really help me grow,” she said.
“I want to keep learning, improving, and growing my career, and I am glad that I get the chance to do that alongside the familiar faces of Nicki and Grace [Maher].”
The two join local players Rachael Goldstein, Lauren Keir, Laura Hughes and Hayley Taylor-Young, along with Grace Maher who also made her debut with the club but has spent the past two seasons with Melbourne Victory.
Canberra United head coach Vicki Linton is also new to the club this season, and said she was excited to welcome the two women on board.
“I remember watching Nicki when she first came onto the Westfield W-League scene as a teenager and the impact she was able to have then,” she said.
“It will be great to have her as part of the core of local players in the team and see how she has developed over the last few years.
“I look forward to working with Bi and seeing how she adapts to this new environment and how she works with the other players in the squad.”
The competition is still awaiting details of its start date, which usually kicks off in November.
