Asthma, hay fever symptoms can be similar to COVID

The ACT has once again recorded no new cases of COVID-19 today, 8 September, however Canberrans have been reminded that as the weather warms up, people will begin to exhibit symptoms of hay fever and asthma.

Canberrans are encouraged to have a plan when it comes asthma and hay fever this spring, as some symptoms of the conditions can be similar to those of the virus.

Those who suffer from hay fever should see their GP at the beginning of spring to discuss a management plan, which could include how to prevent and manage your symptoms. Asthma sufferers should ensure their asthma action plan has been recently reviewed by their GP.

Both hay fever and asthma sufferers should discuss with their GP when they might need to be tested if they experience or develop COVID-19 symptoms.

The Government’s advice states “having a management plan in place with your GP for existing conditions will help you identify any symptoms not usually associated with your asthma or hay fever”.

“If you are managing your hay fever or asthma but are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19, especially fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath, you should get tested. If you are unsure if your symptoms are related to hay fever or asthma, self-isolate until you are able to seek medical advice.”

Canberrans who have travelled outside of the ACT are also advised to monitor the health website of the jurisdiction they’ve visited, and adhere to the health of advice of those areas, particularly Queensland and NSW. Anyone returning to the ACT from Victoria must notify ACT Health before their arrival and immediately quarantine for 14 days.

There are no active COVID-19 cases in the Territory, and the number of negative tests is now at 84,122.

For more information, visit the ACT Government’s COVID-19 website. The ACT’s COVID-19 Helpline is available between 8am and 9pm every day by calling (02) 6207 7244.
