Canberrans urged to take caution on Melbourne Cup Day

Canberrans are being urged to abide by the COVID-19 restrictions in place at gambling and hospitality venues for today’s Melbourne Cup celebrations.

In a statement, the ACT Government has asked people who will be attending or hosting Melbourne Cup events today to avoid crowded venues and to maintain physical distancing from other groups.

As well, people are asked to stick to their bookings and not bring any extra people without checking with the venue first. People are also encouraged to honour their bookings to avoid venues losing income from groups not showing up.

Canberrans are also reminded to provide their contact details to venues in case contact tracing is required, and to remain seated while eating and drinking.

ACT Policing has also issued a warning to Canberrans to keep social distancing in mind.

Deputy Chief Police Officer – Response, Michael Chew, said police had been generally happy with behaviour on Melbourne Cup Day over the past few years, however, they will be targeting antisocial behaviour and drink and drug driving this afternoon and into tonight.

“If you’re attending a Melbourne Cup party, house party or were one of the lucky few who snared a ticket to Thoroughbred Park, please make sure you know your limits when drinking alcohol and look after your mates,” DCPO Chew said.

“If you are drinking, don’t drive. Catch public transport, use a designated driver, or hop in a taxi or rideshare service.

“Please also be mindful that COVID-19 is still a factor in the community, and maintain social distancing.

“ACT Policing will be continuing COVID-19 isolation checks throughout the week,” he said.
