Canberra’s best potato scallop and schnitty revealed

Whether you call it a potato scallop or a potato cake, everyone can agree that there’s nothing quite like the takeaway shop staple – fresh from the fryer with salt and eaten straight from the bag.

Or what about the all-time pub classic the chicken schnitzel? Served with chips, a largely untouched side salad and pepper sauce (or gravy), it’s hard to beat a schnitty from the local club’s bistro.

Travel site Wotif has named a number of hotspots in a roundup of Canberra venues as part of their 2020 People’s Choice Awards, and the results include Canberra’s favourite place to get a potato scallop and the go-to venue for the best schnitty.

In a win for the southside, Kambah takeaway stalwart Little Theo’s has been crowned as the creator of Canberra’s favourite potato scallops, while the best schnitzel gong goes to the Canberra Labor Club in Belconnen.

Canberra’s Handmade Markets took out the ‘best markets’ category, while the best bowls club went to the RUC in Turner. The Alivio Tourist Park was voted the best holiday park in the Nation’s Capital.

While no ACT haunts made it into the national list of favourites, Wotif revealed the state finalists due to the pandemic keeping travel to a minimum.

“By now, many Aussies have realised travelling further afield is currently off the cards, however, what 2020 has highlighted is the incredible local hospitality available in their own backyard,” said Wotif’s managing director Daniel Finch.

“The bowlo, fish and chip shop and Big Things may not be as far flung as a trip overseas, but they sure are uniquely Aussie experiences that Aussies are privileged to have in this country,” he said.

“With summer in reach, many of these businesses need Australia’s support so for those that can, now is the time to start planning your next local trip.”
