Canberra’s compassionate alternative to the Melbourne Cup

The nation’s attention might be fixed on the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November, but Canberra will hold its own race tomorrow: a cruelty-free alternative to watching horse racing.

The Compassionate Stakes Race Day will return to Petrie Plaza on Tuesday afternoon, following a pandemic-induced pause.

The event is open to anyone brave enough to race for glory over 100 metres in a giant inflatable T-Rex costume down Petrie Plaza in the City, from the Merry-Go-Round to the Fish Shack on Bunda Street – because a great time shouldn’t come at the expense of animals, organisers say.

Festivities kick off at 12pm: races for prizes start every half-hour at 12.30pm, and finalists race for the title of ‘The Compassionate Stakes Champion’ at 3pm.

The event is organised by Little Oak Sanctuary and the Animal Defenders Office. They will host stalls where you can learn more about critical animal protection issues.

“Fashion Off The Field” returns with a twist – three of Canberra’s fiercest Drag Queens will grace the event, celebrating fierce, fabulous, and fun fashion with prizes fit for royalty.

Enjoy a veggie sausage sizzle from the Little Oak grill, or indulge in soft-serve treats from local vegan dessert sensations, Future Swirl.

The event is free for spectators and supporters, but the $15 tickets are essential to join the race, so book your spot at the Little Oak Sanctuary website.
