Canberra’s Michael Collins chasing another World Series ring

Former Canberra Cavalry manager Michael Collins is looking to win his second straight World Series with the Houston Astros.

Collins, a former Australian Baseball League player and head coach, won a ring with the Astros in 2022 as the team’s bullpen coach. The Astros started their 2023 playoff campaign with a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins in Game 1 of the Divisional Series on Sunday morning.

The Bullpen Coach is an important role on the team. They are in charge of the relief pitchers who enter the game at critical moments during the playoff game. He helps pull the strings in decisive moments.

The Canberran works with pitchers in a similar capacity to the pitching coach before and after games. During a game, the bullpen coach is in the bullpen with his club’s relief pitchers and oversees their warmups, while also offering advice on pitching mechanics and pitch selection.

Collins was the manager of the Canberra Cavalry for six seasons (2012-2018), helping guide the Cavs to a Claxton Shield and Asia Series championship. He was a player in the ABL from 2010-2012 and part of the minor league system before that, reaching Triple-A (league below MLB) as a hitter.

Collins was also on Team Australia’s staff at the World Baseball Classic.

The Astros won the American League’s West Division and now play the Minnesota Twins in a best-of-five series this week. They play the winner of the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers should they advance.
