Canberra’s newest public school, Throsby School, will open its doors for preschool to Year 6 students at the start of 2022.
The community chose the name, logo, and uniform – a eucalyptus leaf design – using the ACT Government’s YourSay online voting system.
Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Education, said: “I’m happy that the Canberra community could contribute to this important decision, even through lockdown, and are already engaged with our newest school.”
Throsby School is named after the surgeon Charles Throsby, who explored the country around Lake Bathurst, Lake George, and the Murrumbidgee River in 1820. He followed the Molonglo and Queanbeyan Rivers, starting from Lake George to arrive in the present-day Australian Capital Territory in 1821. The suburb of Throsby was named after him in 1992.
The name of the school was selected from a shortlist of distinguished Australians. Ms Berry thanked the families of all the shortlisted people for allowing the ACT Government to name a school in honour of one of these eminent Australians.
The school logo and uniform were chosen from four design concepts based on the region’s natural habitat.
As well as educating young people, Throsby School will be a hub for the community, and provide facilities for clubs and groups, Ms Berry said.
It will include a community room and kitchenette, a multipurpose double gym, sports courts and change-room facilities, an outdoor turf sports field, and outdoor multipurpose hardcourts.
“I look forward to the first day of the 2022 school year, welcoming new students to all our schools across the ACT, and particularly the first students at Throsby School, ACT’s 90th public school,” Ms Berry said.
