Rain didn’t keep Canberrans away from the launch of Park-In Pictures drive-in cinema last weekend, with another weekend of sold-out movie screenings ahead.
The event showed four films in a drive-in style across Friday and Saturday night, with an initial expectation to only run the sessions for a duration of six weeks.
Park-In Pictures’ Steve Gilbert said he wasn’t surprised Canberrans were on board to come along, after launching the same event in Brisbane a month prior.
“Opening weekend was a huge success, the response from the community was incredible. We sold out by 8pm on the day we announced it,” he said.
“It is still to be decided if we will run past the initial six weeks we had planned but the expectation from us is that if the community keeps responding like they have, then we will keep the movies coming. It will likely be fortnightly or monthly.”
The Saturday night event experience heavy rainfall, however Mr Gilbert said it was fitting for the session.
“Despite the rain on Saturday night, the turnout was still amazing, and the atmosphere was incredible – especially for the Bladerunner fans because that environment matched the scenes perfectly,” he said.
The event is a collaboration with the Canberra Airport and Screencraft Canberra and is being held at Majura Park.
Another four films will be shown at the sold-out event this weekend, but tickets are still available for the 3 and 4 July.
Tickets are also available for sessions up until 11 July.
For those who have attended or are going to attend the event, Park-In Pictures are giving their customers the chance to win free tickets.
“If they use the #driveinvibes and post a picture on Instagram or Facebook of their set up or being at the event, they could go into the running to win a complimentary ticket,” Mr Gilbert said.
