Capital Psychology Clinic creating a positive impact

In business together for more than seven years, Directors of Capital Psychology Clinic, Dr Eryn Davies and Jenna Keen, won the Social Impact of the Year Award at the recent 2023 Canberra Women in Business Awards.

They are proud to work with their award-winning team to champion one another and support the Canberra community.

Tell us about your career paths and what led you to start your business?

Following our graduations from University of Canberra, we both began working in the public mental health system, Eryn with a focus on trauma and neurodivergent populations, and Jenna with a focus and love for perinatal work and learning/educational development, before meeting and deciding we would love to run a practice together.

We both share common values and goals of serving our community while also providing a high-quality workplace environment for psychologists, in response to the high level of burnout in our field.

Tell us about your practice and what differentiates it.

Our practice, Capital Psychology Clinic, has been established for over seven years now, and we continue to have supportive senior clinicians who have been with us from the beginning, along with inspiring younger clinicians.

The variation of experience and fields of practice and expertise on our team continues to amaze us, with clinicians being experts in fields such as perinatal care, trauma and first responder care, gender/LGBQTI, neurodivergence including Autism and ADHD, and specific assessment experts in Autism, ADHD, learning disorders and giftedness assessments.

The reason this is so impressive is because our clinicians don’t just “do” this work but have special interests and expertise in these areas, providing high levels of care for adults, teens and children, which we are so proud of.

We think these days, businesses can become too focused on providing monotonous care, with maximum back-to-back sessions and little time out for support and team cohesion.

As directors, we see our primary role as looking after our team, clinicians and administration, so they can then provide a high level of care and also feel very satisfied with their work. Our team is a mini work family who love to celebrate together and always champion each other to learn and achieve. We believe our focus as directors on our team, rather than just the business, makes an enormous difference in our company.

What does winning the Canberra Women in Business Social Impact of the Year Award mean to you?

This award means so many things for us and our team. We are honoured to have all our hard work acknowledged and are so excited to share this win with our team, who were all present on the night.

Our current team is such a professional, hardworking and supportive group of individuals, showing that our strategies and goals have successfully married up with our values to develop a team of unbelievable individuals who work as a whole together to help our community and also to support and champion each other.

This award allows us to celebrate and thank our team for being the wonderful clinicians and admin superstars that they are, while continuing to keep strategies and planning forward focused, on the development of more community and team focused support, with the ultimate goal of expanding our reach and impact.

It was wonderful to spend time with the other award winners on the night, to learn about their inspiring journeys and plans. When you get a group of motivated business women together, there is no stopping us.

Any plans for the future you’d like to share?

We are certainly working on some exciting plans and strategies for the future, to increase the type of support and reach within our community, and also to expand opportunities for our team. At this stage, we will keep them under wraps, but 2024 is going to be an exciting year!
