The University of Canberra Capitals’ losing streak came to an end, two Opals suffered injury setbacks and Melbourne Boomers star Cayla George had another big game in round 10 of the WNBL season.

With their 92-85 defeat of Bendigo Spirit, the Capitals finally scored their first win of the season on Wednesday night.

A double-double from young gun Jade Melbourne (18 points, 11 assists) and 24 points from WNBA first-round draft pick Rae Burrell helped halt the Caps’ skid at 15 games, which had stretched into the final three weeks of last season.

Another stellar performance from Melbourne Boomers star Cayla George brought the Caps back to earth on Saturday, though, the Boomers running out 78-57 winners.

George contributed 37 points and 17 rebounds – both game-high figures – and remains atop the league leaderboard for most rebounds, most three-pointers and most minutes per game.

George’s Opals and WNBL teammate Tess Madgen missed the game and has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

The captain of the Australian national team, Madgen had only played her first game back from knee surgery on January 4 but the ladder-leading Boomers determined this weekend that she would need more time on the sidelines to recover.

The prognosis is rosier for Madgen’s Opals teammate Steph Talbot, who sustained a leg injury in the Adelaide Lightning’s tight 81-77 loss to the Sydney Flames on Thursday.

The Flames were down by as many as 23 points in the third quarter but rallied to edge out the Lightning, whose captain Talbot managed only five minutes on the floor.

A member of the team of the tournament at last year’s World Cup, Talbot failed her fitness test ahead of Saturday’s match against the Bendigo Spirit, which ended in an 86-68 win for the Spirit.

A social media statement from the Lightning said the club expected Talbot would return “very soon”.

Guard Sami Whitcomb had 33 points and four assists as the Perth Lynx kept in touch with the tournament’s heavyweights by defeating Southside Flyers 94-86 on Saturday.

Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson saw only 15 minutes of game time and finished with five points and three rebounds.

Mikaela Ruef’s 26 points and 12 rebounds helped the Townsville Fire to a 92-77 defeat of the Sydney Flames to close out the round.

What began as an even contest slipped out of the Flames’ grasp in the second half as Ruef found her groove, ably assisted by Stephanie Reid (15 points, eight assists) and captain Lauren Nicholson (13 points).
