CatholicCare to manage part of government’s Toolangi complex

Following a tender process, CatholicCare has been appointed to manage 33 affordable rental properties as community housing in the ACT Government’s Toolangi development, a complex of 66 purpose-built dwellings in Kaleen.

The affordable rental properties will be integrated with 33 public housing properties, and ACT Housing Minister Yvette Berry said all 66 units are two-bedroom and built to Class C adaptable building standards, with each building equipped with lifts and automatic doors.

“Further significant modifications have been made to some of the public housing units to better meet individual tenant needs to ensure they are supported to age in place,” she said.

Chair of the ACT Disability Reference Group, Dougie Herd, said Toolangi “points the way to a more inclusive Canberra for everyone”.

“Affordable, adaptable, accessible homes in which all people can live well, build natural relationships and thrive together are the foundation stones of liveable communities.”

Ms Berry said Toolangi was “purposefully designed to bring residents together to create a sense of community and increase social participation, including a community garden area”.

“A community development program will also be created to bring the residents together to build a strong, socially inclusive community.

“This is a great outcome for tenants, as well with flexible living arrangements and close to shops, services and transport and I look forward to seeing this community grow and come together,” Ms Berry said.

CatholicCare’s focus will be on creating a community, and will provide management and property maintenance services, as well as some supports for residents.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to partner with the ACT Government and be able to release brand new units into the affordable rental market,” said CatholicCare Canberra and Goulburn CEO, Anne Kirwan. “We cannot wait to be part of this integrated Toolangi community.”

The Toolangi complex forms part of the Government’s 10-year Housing Strategy released in October 2018.
