CatholicCare to manage part of governmentโ€™s Toolangi complex

Following a tender process, CatholicCare has been appointed to manage 33 affordable rental properties as community housing in the ACT Governmentโ€™s Toolangi development, a complex of 66 purpose-built dwellings in Kaleen.

The affordable rental properties will be integrated with 33 public housing properties, and ACT Housing Minister Yvette Berry said all 66 units are two-bedroom and built to Class C adaptable building standards, with each building equipped with lifts and automatic doors.

โ€œFurther significant modifications have been made to some of the public housing units to better meet individual tenant needs to ensure they are supported to age in place,โ€ she said.

Chair of the ACT Disability Reference Group, Dougie Herd, said Toolangi โ€œpoints the way to a more inclusive Canberra for everyoneโ€.

โ€œAffordable, adaptable, accessible homes in which all people can live well, build natural relationships and thrive together are the foundation stones of liveable communities.โ€

Ms Berry said Toolangi was โ€œpurposefully designed to bring residents together to create a sense of community and increase social participation, including a community garden areaโ€.

โ€œA community development program will also be created to bring the residents together to build a strong, socially inclusive community.

โ€œThis is a great outcome for tenants, as well with flexible living arrangements and close to shops, services and transport and I look forward to seeing this community grow and come together,โ€ Ms Berry said.

CatholicCareโ€™s focus will be on creating a community, and will provide management and property maintenance services, as well as some supports for residents.

โ€œThis is a wonderful opportunity to partner with the ACT Government and be able to release brand new units into the affordable rental market,โ€ said CatholicCare Canberra and Goulburn CEO, Anne Kirwan. โ€œWe cannot wait to be part of this integrated Toolangi community.โ€

The Toolangi complex forms part of the Governmentโ€™s 10-year Housing Strategy released in October 2018.
