The Canberra Cavalry will resume its Australian Baseball League (ABL) season against the Sydney Blue Sox in Lismore later this week after the NSW Government came to the rescue of the Sydney side.
The Cavalry will head to Lismore’s Albert Park Baseball Complex for a four-game series against the Blue Sox from Friday 22 January under a partnership announced by NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro today.
The series will run from Friday to Sunday and be free to attend for fans.
The Cavalry have endured a tough start to the season and are coming off a 0-4 series loss against the Melbourne Aces at Melbourne Ballpark.
The Blue Sox season was hanging by a thread after already having 12 games cancelled due to recent border closures.
“Border closures have forced the cancellation of 12 Blue Sox games, resulting in the loss of ticket sales and potentially threatening the future of the team,” Mr Barilaro said.
Baseball Australia chief executive Cam Vale said the NSW Government’s support was instrumental in allowing the Blue Sox to compete in the remainder of the season.
“Thanks to the NSW Government we have found not only a solution for the Blue Sox, but an incredibly creative opportunity with an All Stars weekend, continuing the international exposure of the 2020/21 ABL season in these challenging times,” Mr Vale said.
“Albert Park has been a backbone of our Little League National Championships, and the support we have received from the Far North Coast baseball community, Lismore City Council and NSW Government has been nothing short of phenomenal.”
Game times for this weekend will be confirmed shortly.
An announcement on the remainder of the ABL regular-season schedule and playoff format is set to be made later today.
