‘Check ins’ soar as ACT records no new cases

Canberrans using public transport and visiting places like supermarkets and petrol stations must now check in using the Check In CBR app, and Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith says there’s been a “massive increase” since it became mandatory yesterday, 15 July.

“The requirement to check in through the Check In CBR app came into effect at midday yesterday across a whole range of new settings, and we saw more than 307,000 check ins from midday yesterday to midnight last night,” she said.

“We can go by these numbers to indicate that people are really doing the right thing.

“Business owners are really welcoming the Check In CBR, they know it’s going to protect them, it’s going to protect their customers, it’s going to enable contact tracing to take place much more quickly if there is a case in the ACT.

“Everything that we’re hearing is that businesses and venues are really welcoming it as well and they’re really doing their utmost to encourage patrons to make sure that they check in.”

A glitch with the Check In CBR app that shows an incorrect location upon check in was only on the users’ end, Ms Stephen-Smith said, with ACT Health confident they have the correct data.

The ACT recorded no new cases of COVID-19 today and Ms Stephen-Smith said authorities would continue to watch the ongoing and escalating situations in Sydney and Melbourne “very closely”.

Yesterday the ACT imposed stay-at-home orders for people entering the Territory from Victoria from midnight last night.

The requirements are set to remain in place until at least 11.59pm Tuesday 20 July, in line with the snap lockdown announced by the Victorian Government on Thursday afternoon.

Non-ACT residents will need an approved exemption to enter the Territory.

Ms Stephen-Smith said despite the ACT’s no active cases, the Territory’s testing numbers need to be maintained.

“So again thank you to those people who are staffing the centres and [we] encourage anyone who has symptoms to come forward and get tested.”
