Cheeky Chicken: A home away from home

Cheeky Chickens

Cheeky Chicken Early Learning Centre (ELC) in Hughes is raising the bar when it comes to children’s education. Child-led programs, indoor-outdoor learning, and mixed-age groups make the centre a home away from home.

Cheeky Chicken’s educational program reflects the early learning framework, is play-based and built around the children and their interests.

A standout feature of Cheeky Chicken is its amazing natural garden, it breaks the mould for the industry, these outdoor play areas form a large part of the program. The centre’s model incorporates mixed-age groups, allowing the children to develop their social skills and be with their siblings rather than being separated from family. The younger children’s social and language development benefits from the model, and the older children benefit in helping their younger classmates.

The centre even has its own van, a brilliant resource for the Cheeky Chicken children to explore all Canberra has to offer. Also undertaking year-round excursions across Canberra, from the Botanic Gardens to art galleries, everyone loves these trips that allow the children to experience the world around them.

This boutique centre has well above the required educator-to-child ratios. Because of this, each child is free to take supervised, calculated risks, which is important for social development and inquiry-based learning. There is no fake grass or cotton wool wrapped children here; the children get to be children, in a safe and natural environment.
