Civic carparks close for light rail disruption

And so it begins. There will soon be far fewer parking spaces in Civic; the ACT Government will turn the public carparks on the corner of London Circuit and Constitution Avenue, and another at 41-51 Marcus Clarke Street into construction site compounds.

These carparks will be closed from August, and the closures are expected to be in place for several years (possibly until 2026).

Signs will be installed in the coming weeks. The compounds will be used for site offices, storage, construction parking, and utility installation.

Earlier this week, the ACT Government revealed that its plans to build the light rail line to Woden would create traffic jams and shut down major arterial roads for at least four years – the birthing pains of a more sustainable, better connected city.

Light rail to Woden is the ACT’s biggest ever infrastructure build, a government spokesperson said.

“Building light rail to Woden will provide more convenient and reliable transport options for people on the Southside, help prevent future traffic gridlock, and cut transport emissions.”

The government project team will provide updates on timing, impacts, and any further changes. To sign up for project updates, visit act.gov.au/lightrailtowoden.

The government will hold city information sessions about light rail to Woden:

  • Monday 26 July 4-7pm, Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre, 180 London Circuit, Canberra City
  • Monday 2 August 4-7pm, QT Canberra 1 London Circuit, Canberra City
