The ACT Government is asking for the community’s input to name the new school in Molonglo which is set to open in 2021 for pre and primary school students.
The local community has been asked to vote for their preferred name from a list of five options: Isabel Coe School, Ngingali Cullen School, Evelyn Scott School, Arnold Hunter School, and John Budby School.
ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry said each is the name of an Aboriginal leader known for activism and reform.
“I would like to thank their families for allowing the ACT Government to name a school in honour of one of these leaders,” she said.
“I recognise that Australia was and is Aboriginal land and I am grateful for the support of these families as we seek reconciliation.”
The Government is also seeking input on the design of the school’s logo and uniform, with four concepts available to choose from.
Ms Berry said the logo and uniform concepts have been developed with “consideration regarding gender neutrality, ease of manufacture and ease of matching colour and distinctiveness from other schools”.
The $47 million primary school will cater for up to 644 students from preschool to year six. The school will also see a $23 million high school integrated with the primary school on the same site, which will open its doors for the 2023 school year for students in years seven to 10. According to the ACT Government, the secondary school will be home to specialist spaces for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The ‘P-10’ school will also be home to sport and recreation facilities such as a multi-purpose gym, sports courts and changerooms, outdoor field, hardcourts and cricket nets.
It will be the ACT’s second zero-emissions school.
