The extraordinary work of more than 100 corrections officers in the ACT has been recognised today as part of National Corrections Day.
Minister for Corrections, Mick Gentleman, said corrections officers often go beyond the call of duty and should be commended for their dedication, bravery, integrity, leadership, and innovation.
“While much of the work in the corrections system takes place out of the public eye, the work the staff do is crucial to community safety and helping detainees get their lives back on track,” Mr Gentleman said.
“In what has been a tough couple of years across the nation, corrections officers have been working throughout, striving to protect detainees from the pandemic. I am proud of how ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) staff have performed in these challenging circumstances.”
National Corrections Day recognises the important work corrections officers do across Australia, and rewards ACTCS staff who have completed more than 10 or 15 years of continuous and meritorious service.
ACTCS Commissioner Ray Johnson said in addition to the pandemic, staff at ACTCS facilities continued to operate during floods and hailstorms.
“This shows that no matter what the situation, the team is committed to making a difference in new and innovative ways,” Commissioner Johnson said.
“Our officers and support staff undergo regular training that provides the latest information and guidance on how they can have a positive influence on an offender and the various programs and services that are available to help promote rehabilitation,” Commissioner Johnson said.
The theme for National Corrections Day 2023 is ‘collaborative corrections’, and seeks to formally recognise the valuable contribution corrections staff make to their wider community.
Activities and events will take place around the country on National Corrections Day, including an event at the Alexander Maconochie Centre for staff and their families. This includes the ACTCS’ annual awards presentation, lunch, games, and family tours.
On National Corrections Day, landmarks around Canberra are illuminated in blue to raise awareness and thank corrections staff for their work. These include the National Carillion, Old Parliament House, John Gorton Building, the Treasury Building, light rail stops, the Canberra Times fountain in front of the Canberra Centre, and the Malcom Fraser bridge.
