COVID-19 pandemic impacts on local sport

Due to the ever-changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation continues to evolve. However, a number of organisations for local sport have already made announcements regarding their upcoming seasons. For more information, contact your local sporting organisation.

  • Rugby: Rugby Australia, along with the State and Territory Member Unions, has unanimously agreed to postpone all Community Rugby until the first week of May, effective immediately. This recommendation covers rugby matches, rugby training and face-to-face rugby education courses.
  • Basketball: Basketball ACT (BACT) has made the decision to cancel all remaining games for the 2019-2020 Summer Competitions, and to suspend all other programs until further notice. BACT notes this includes the postponement of the start of the Premier Competitions until potentially after 30 April; however, a decision on a proposed start date was expected in coming days.
  • Horse racing: The Canberra Racing Club has announced that the next scheduled race meeting on 3 April will be open only to participants and essential staff. This will extend as required based on government advice.
  • Football: Football Federation Australia issued a statement on Monday morning, 16 March, confirming that grassroots football, including all levels of the National Premier Leagues and FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds, may continue to be played at this time in line with government advice, but with additional measures implemented to further reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection or transmission. The situation is subject to constant change.

Charity Shield: A Charity Shield match is scheduled for Saturday 21 March at McKellar Park featuring a doubleheader between Belconnen United and Woden Weston women’s teams (5pm) before Canberra Olympic take on Tigers FC in the men’s match (7.30pm). Entry via donation. All money raised will go to The Salvation Army’s Bushfire Appeal. For up-to date-details, contact Capital Football.
