Nominations are open for the Canberra Women in Business (CWB) 2018 Gala Awards.
The awards are held each year to recognise and reward the valuable contributions and outstanding achievements of ACT business women, and to help them build confidence, and a personal and business profile to offer them a “pathway to greater influence”.
The number of categories has doubled this year, with new awards for the not-for-profit, public service and innovation sectors. CWB has also partnered with the Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML) to present the inaugural IML Leadership Award.
In addition, CWB will run a People’s Choice Award to ensure “the whole community has the chance to recognise and celebrate the great women they see in business, government and the not-for-profit sector”. The Young Women in Business age category has been extended to 35 years of age, to recognise those women who start their business after the age of 30.
This year, there are judges from corporate and small business, past winners, communications social enterprises and business associations.
To nominate an ACT businesswoman for an award, visit cwb.org.au/awards/nominate before nominations close on Thursday 20 September. Nominations for the IML Leadership Award close on Friday 28 September. This year’s finalists will receive speech coaching from Ginger Gorman, so they will ready to give “the acceptance speech of their lives”.
The finalists will be announced on Thursday 4 October, with the winners to be announced at the gala dinner on Thursday 8 November at Pialligo Estate.

Distracted driver fined
An ACT road user has been issued $670 worth of fines and deducted three demerit points for “driver distraction”. On Tuesday 4 September, police stopped a driver on Coulter Drive, Belconnen for driving with one hand, using a phone in the other and travelling with a small dog on their lap.
Police issued infringements for driving using a hand-held mobile phone and driving with an animal in lap.
ACT Police have reminded all drivers that “road safety is everybody’s responsibility”, and anything that a driver does that takes attention away from the road could have tragic consequences.
The infringement comes after ACT Police announced they are targeting driver distraction during September, in accordance with the 2018-19 Road Safety Calendar.
Rotary parties at Floriade
Canberra Rotary District 9710 has been named as Floriade’s Supported Charity Partner for the 2018 festival. Rotary District Governor for District 9710, Margaret Hassell, said Rotary celebrates 90 years in Canberra this year, and it’s “fitting” the organisation will be able to share their birthday with Canberrans at Floriade.
“Rotary is looking forward to 30 full days of action onsite at Floriade where our Rotary 90th Birthday Marquee will offer lots of colour and fun; we’ll have a monster birthday cake, a mega birthday card for visitors to sign, and lots more to enjoy from 15 September until 14 October”, Ms she said.
Rotary will also host Pop in the Park, a 90th birthday party with a barbecue lunch and entertainment, on Sunday 30 September.
