Cyclist dead, others injured in country road tragedy

One person is dead and four others are injured after a car ploughed into a group of cyclists on a country road.

The car crashed into the four cyclists in Armidale in northeastern NSW at around 3:30pm on Saturday before hitting a tree.

“One of the cyclists died at the scene,” NSW police said.

“He is yet to be formally identified.”

The driver was trapped in the car but was freed before being treated by emergency services.

The three other cyclists were also treated at the scene.

New England Police District officers have established a crime scene, which will be examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.

Long Swamp Road remains closed and is expected to be reopened later on Sunday.

Police are appealing for more information from witnesses of people with dashcam footage to contact local police CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
