Date in court for two drink drivers caught after date

A boozy Friday night date has ended in a follow-up court date for two people after police detected both driving the same vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit in Gungahlin late on Friday night.

The first driver, a 25-year-old Kambah woman on a provisional licence, recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.085 after she was observed reversing her Holden Barina in the intersection of Gundaroo Drive and Gungahlin Drive, Gungahlin about 11.04pm Friday 26 February.

During this traffic stop, police advised the passenger in the Barina that they believed he was under the influence of alcohol, and warned him not to drive the vehicle.

About 11.50pm police observed the same Barina mount the kerb in Bruning Street, Gungahlin and come to a stop. The driver, a 29-year-old Bonner man, was the passenger in the car when it was previously stopped by police.

He was subjected to a breath analysis and recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.199.

Both drivers were issued with Immediate Suspension Notices, suspending their right to drive in the ACT.

ACT Policing Officer in Charge, Gungahlin Station, Inspector Rachel Hutka said the behaviour of both these drivers underscored the importance of planning your evening.

“You should always have a plan for the end of your night,” Inspector Hutka said.

“Just because you’ve swiped right early in the evening, it doesn’t mean you’ll be right to drive later on.”

“There are many ways to get home safely, including taxis, ride share services, or someone in your group staying sober,” she said.

“We have arranged dates in court for both of these people.”

The man was bailed to appear at the ACT Magistrates Court on 22 March 2021 charged with drink driving and resisting a Territory Official.

The woman is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on 3 May 2021 charged with drink driving.
