Design of new local shops now open for consultation

Canberrans are invited to have their say on draft designs for significant shopping centre upgrades in Campbell, Duffy and Kaleen.

“The ACT Government is committed to investing in local shopping centre precincts to improve their look and feel, upgrade safety and accessibility, and ensure local shops are vibrant places that the community can enjoy,” said ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel.

“We are now releasing substantial designs to the community and asking for feedback on what we’ve got right, what should be prioritised, and how we can make their local shops somewhere they want to be.”

For more information on the project, and to find out how you can provide feedback on your local shop, visit www.yoursay.act.gov.au. Consultation closes Monday 10 May.

Feedback will focus on accessibility, including footpaths, car parking, and crossing locations, and improving public spaces for gathering and enjoyment, such as through new seating, landscaping, or lighting.

In Duffy, Mr Steel said, the government wanted to hear from children and families about how the existing play space beside the shopping centre can be made more fun and enjoyable.

Feedback will inform the final designs, which Mr Steel expects will be completed midyear.

These upgrades are intended to encourage Canberrans to shop locally, in turn bringing more money to businesses and strengthening community connections.

“Community feedback ensures the best outcome for regular visitors to the local shops,” he said.

“I encourage the community to head to YourSay, take a look at the designs, and provide feedback either electronically or in person at one of the pop-ups planned at the local shops.

Mr Steel said these projects deliver on a substantial election commitment, and that their completion would support local jobs and Canberra businesses.

Now more than ever, we need to protect local jobs, invest in local businesses, and support our city’s economic recover,” he said.

In the 2020-21 Budget, the ACT Government also invested in detail design for improvements to Pialligo. This included formalised carparking, new footpaths along Beltana Road, and traffic improvements including a new left-in, left-out intersection with Beltana Road, Kallaroo Road and Pialligo Avenue.

This work will begin soon, and the government will consult residents and businesses.
