A pleasant two-hour drive from the national capital lies the historic NSW Southern Highlands. It’s a convenient – and scenic – half-way point between Canberra and Sydney for families and friends to meet up, and is also popular with foodies, nature lovers, sporty types, adventure seekers and retirees as a beautiful place to explore and unwind or to live, work and play.
Steeped in character and charm, the major towns and smaller villages of the Highlands are a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city – from Bundanoon in the south to Hill Top in the north, Canyonleigh in the west to Robertson on the eastern fringes. The major towns of Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale are all within an easy drive of the many villages which give the Southern Highlands its unique appeal. Each village and town has its own special personality and is home to unique shops, eateries, accommodation and attractions.
One of our favourites is Berrima, widely recognised as the best preserved example of a Georgian village on the Australian mainland. Here you can wander quaint streets, indulge your senses with delicious local produce, enjoy a quality local drop or gourmet coffee by a cosy fireplace (such as at the new PepperGreen Estate Cellar Door), mix with the locals at the Berrima Schoolyard Market (fourth Sunday of the month), explore the National Trust owned Harpers Mansion (built 1834) – and more!
Nearby Bowral is famous for the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame, as well as picturesque gardens, boutique shopping, popular eateries, local vineyards and scenic walks. Home to amenities such as hospitals, cricket, golf and bowling clubs, and Bowral Railway Station, which offers regular train services to Sydney and Canberra, it is a popular place for retirees and commuters to live as well as for visitors to explore.
Throughout the year, the Southern Highlands also plays host to a variety of popular and quirky events including the annual Bundanoon Highland Gathering in April, Pie Time in June, Wintertime – Christmas in July, Bowral’s Tulip Time in Bowral in spring, Wildfest in October, and frequent Open Gardens.
