The Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) will remain available 24/7 throughout the ACT’s lockdown period to help Canberrans affected by domestic, family, and intimate partner violence.
“It is hard to predict how people’s circumstances may be exacerbated by COVID and the current lockdown, but DVCS is here and ready to support the community, whether they be a first-time caller or an existing client of DVCS,” said CEO Sue Webeck.
Domestic and family violence can happen more often and more aggressively in isolation and stress, and the DVCS encourages both people subjected to violence and those who use it to contact them. If you are concerned about a friend, a neighbour, or someone in your community, you can also call DVCS for advice and support.
“We know that the experience and pattern of violence can and will change for people over time, and we want to encourage people to reach out and seek support. DVCS, along with other non-government and government services, are here and available for you.”
The DVCS has a list of ways to increase safety during COVID-19, including being prepared; protecting yourself during a physical assault, maintaining social connections, and practising self-care.

If you are affected by violence, you can leave home to seek support, Ms Webeck said.
Clients can engage with DVCS during regular business hours via email, SMS, social media, and online chat.
DVCS will continue to meet face-to-face with clients who need urgent safety planning, crisis intervention, emergency accommodation or other supports with COVID-safe practices.
Where DVCS cannot meet clients in person, they will meet their needs through contact-limited accommodation check-in, parcel drops, voucher exchanges, and phone or online consultations.
You can also seek help from police. Telstra public phones have recently become free to use.

Case management (Staying@Home, Room4Change and Young People’s Outreach Program) will support clients during regular business hours remotely via phone and video conferencing.
DVCS will respond to police and hospital requests as normal.
DVCS will not work from the Court from Monday 16 to Friday 20 August.
