Don’t let criminals break in over the Christmas break

ACT Policing encourages all Canberrans to lock up before heading out this summer.

Whether you’re travelling for Christmas or spending the holidays at home, make security a priority.

Detective Sergeant Jason Dziubinski, from ACT Policing’s Proactive Intervention and Disruption team, said simple security practices were all it took to ward off criminals looking for an easy target.

“As people begin to unwind for the Christmas break, it is easy to forget some of the simple security principles we take for granted each day,” Sgt Dziubinski said.

“Everyone loves to kick back over summer; however, that relaxed attitude can give criminals the opportunity they need to ruin someone’s Christmas.

“Offenders look for easy targets such as an unlocked door, poorly secured car keys, or valuables left out in the open. The harder you make it for them, the less chance there is you will become a victim of opportunistic crime.”

Last year, Sgt Dziubinski said 239 burglaries were reported to ACT Policing in December. This year, only 121 burglaries have been committed in the Territory as of 20 December.

“We must remain vigilant to ensure this positive trend continues,” Sgt Dziubinski said.
