A 37-year-old Wanniassa man who returned a blood alcohol reading seven times the legal limit will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday 18 September) charged with high range drink driving.
About 2.30pm yesterday (Thursday 17 September), police were conducting mobile patrols in Hughes when they observed a white Toyota Corolla sedan allegedly fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Denison Street and Carruthers Street.
A short time later, the manโs car was stopped by police, and the man underwent a roadside alcohol screening test which returned a positive result.
He was taken to Woden Police Station where further testing returned a blood alcohol content of 0.351 – more than seven times the legal limit of 0.05.
The driver was served with a 90-day Immediate Suspension Notice. He was also charged with drink driving, fail to stop at an intersection and breach of bail.
Officer in Charge of Woden Police Station, Detective Acting Inspector Chris Ball was baffled by the irresponsible nature of the driverโs behaviour.
โI canโt understand what goes through someoneโs head thinking itโs okay to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, particularly at the level of intoxication of this driver,โ Inspector Ball said.
โIt is astonishing that someone hasnโt been seriously injured or killed due to this driverโs incredibly stupid decisions.โ
