A 25-year-old Wright man has been charged following an incident on Sunday morning where he failed to stop for police after being detected speeding on Hindmarsh Drive.

About 4:05am, Sunday 17 November, police were conducting speed enforcement activity when they detected a white Mitsubishi Triton travelling in excess of the speed limit.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle, however the driver of the Mitsubishi accelerated away onto Jerrabomberra Avenue, mounted a concrete median, crossed onto the wrong side of the road, before entering a nearby carpark and stalling the vehicle.

At this time, the 25-year-old driver exited the vehicle and took off on foot, despite police directing him to stop.

Following a short foot pursuit, the man was apprehended by police in nearby bushland.

Police subjected the driver to a roadside breath test, which was positive for alcohol. He was transported to Woden Police Station, where he returned a breath analysis of 0.271 – more than five times the legal limit.

The 25-year-old was served an immediate suspension notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 90 days.

The man has also been charged with driving a motor vehicle with alcohol in breath, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, exceeding the speed limit, and resisting police. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court next month.
