Driver caught going more than 100km/h over speed limit

ACT Policing were ‘disgusted’ by the alarming number of speeding incidents over the weekend, with one driver detected at 214km/h in a 100km/h zone on Majura Parkway.

At 3.27pm on Saturday 13 June, police detected a white Ford Falcon, driven by a 23-year-old Florey man with three passengers in the car, travelling at 214km/h.

He was the second man stopped by police on Majura Parkway that afternoon; less than two hours earlier, police detected a black Ford ute driven by a 39-year-old Gowrie man travelling at 154km/h.

Both drivers were detected in the section of the Majura Parkway with a posted speed limit of 100km/h, and were issued with infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

In further examples of high speed detections on the weekend, a Franklin man was detected by police travelling at 163km/h on Majura Parkway at 1.08am Friday 12 June, and a P-plater was recorded driving at 125km/h in an 80km/h zone on Saturday 13 June on Gungahlin Drive.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, said he was disgusted by this driving behaviour.

“When you exceed the speed limit by more than 100km/h you display a complete disregard for your own life, your passengers and other motorists,” he said.

“It is idiotic, dangerous and completely indefensible. We have seen too much of this behaviour lately. Do these people have a death wish or do they want to kill someone else?

“At the speeds we’re talking about here, you have no margin for error. Make the slightest mistake and you are facing tragic consequences.”

The penalty for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h is a fine of $1,841 and 6 demerit points. For a P-plate driver, this will result in a loss of licence.
