Driver speeding 90km/h over returns positive drug test

A 22-year-old Jerrabomberra man was arrested by ACT Policing last night, after travelling 90km/h over the speed limit and returning a positive drug screen result.

Police allege the man was initially clocked doing 123km/h in the 100km/h zone in a Hyundai, when he failed to stop after police activated their lights.

The driver reached 190 km/h at about 10.30pm, before pulling over for police on advice from his passenger.

The 22-year-old-man was then arrested and taken to City Police Station after returning a positive result for a roadside drug screen.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, said the combination of speed and drugs was irresponsible.

“Driving at that speed, under the influence of drugs and failing to stop for police is a recipe for disaster,” he said.

“There is zero tolerance for people who think they can make up their own road rules and endanger the lives of everyone else on the road.”

The incident comes just after the July infringement details were released this week, showing 918 infringements issued over the month.

During the whole of 2019, just over 5,300 infringements were issued in the ACT; however by July 2020, that number had already been surpassed with an excess of 6,200 fines issued.

Detective Inspector Boorman said the figures and high speeds ACT Police were continually seeing were “disturbing”.

“Last month, despite the warnings that police were on the road, 47 of the drivers we apprehended were doing in excess of 30km/h, 11 were doing in excess of 45km/h over the limit, and three were detected doing 70km/h or more in school zones.”

“There is no excuse. People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions and they can do that by very simply taking their foot off the accelerator.”

Throughout the month of August, ACT Policing has a focus on “sharing the road”, which emphasises being aware of others (including vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists), and being considerate on the roads.
