Driver tests positive to meth after early morning pursuit through Canberra

A 42-year-old Canberra man has been charged with multiple offences following an early morning pursuit across Canberra.

About 1.50am this morning, Saturday 7 May, a white Volkswagen Jetta failed to stop for police on Aikman Drive, Belconnen. Soon after, the Jetta was seen travelling at speed on Barry Drive where it was again engaged by police and failed to stop.

At the intersection of Barry Drive and Marcus Clarke Street stop-sticks were successfully deployed in an effort to stop the Jetta, however the vehicle continued through the Barry Drive and Northbourne Avenue intersection and onto Cooyong Street.

Police continued to pursue the vehicle onto Parkes Way, where the deflated front left tyre fell off the wheel rim.

While the Jetta continued on Parkes Way, police attempted to deploy another tyre deflation device. The Jetta changed direction and drove straight towards a police officer. The vehicle was estimated to be travelling at approximately 120km/h at this time.

The pursuit of the Jetta continued along Parkes Way, the Tuggeranong Parkway and Drakeford Drive where police observed the front left wheel of the vehicle disintegrating as it dragged along the road surface.

The Jetta eventually came to a stop off Marconi Crescent, Kambah where the 42-year-old driver was arrested by police after a short foot pursuit.

The driver tested positive to the presence of methylamphetamine in his system and it was confirmed he was on bail for other offences.

He was subsequently charged with multiple offences including drive while disqualified, fail to stop for police, dangerous driving, drive at police, drug driving, use of false numberplates and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

The man is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today where bail will be opposed.
