Drug driver charged over fatal collision that claimed Sue Salthouse’s life

ACT Policing have charged a 33-year-old Ngunnawal man with culpable driving causing death and drug driving for a fatal collision on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge on 20 July that claimed the life of ACT Senior Australian of the Year, Sue Salthouse.

At 2.40pm on Monday 20 July, Ms Salthouse was involved in a collision between a car and her wheelchair-accessible motorcycle and died later in hospital.

ACT Policing said the driver assisted them with their inquiries from the beginning and was able to remain in the community while a “complex investigation” took place.

“MVC (Motor vehicle crash) investigations take a while, it’s quite technical and needs a considerable amount expertise for physics,” a spokesperson said.

“It’s really important we get that right.”

ACT Policing said they had maintained contact with Ms Salthouse’s family throughout the investigation.

Police said while the matter was before the courts and yet to be proven, their tests indicated meth amphetamine in the driver’s system.

The investigation received assistance from people in the community and have gathered CTV footage from the area.

ACT Policing said there had been six fatalities on the road this year and “every one of them is one too many”.

“It causes pain.”

The man will appear in court on 18 December.
