The trial period for the Canberra electric bike library will be extended for 12 months, with the ACT Government citing high demand for the program.
The library’s inventory will be expanded, too, to allow more Canberrans to give electric bikes a go.
“With so much interest in the program, our partners at SEE-change will work with Switched on Cycles to offer open days every Friday where people can drop in and try the variety of bikes available as well,” said Emissions Reduction Minister, Shane Rattenbury.
The try-before-you-buy electric bike library allows Canberrans to try out an electric bike for a week for free, however borrowers must be covered by Pedal Power insurance ($15-25). It’s hoped the program will encourage people to purchase their own electric bike and reduce their reliance on cars for getting around the Territory.
“Fossil-fuel powered transport makes up over 60% of Canberra’s overall emissions. It’s critical that we rapidly cut emissions from transport and this electric bike library helps people to do that,” said Mr Rattenbury.
The library has electric bikes and electric cargo bikes, as well as accessories like child seats, grocery baskets and bags.
The ACT Government says participants in the program had, on average, replaced car trips of between 10-50km each week.
“No matter where you live in Canberra, you can borrow an e-bike for a week and test how it works for you when commuting, grocery shopping, or even on a school run.
“These bikes can play an important role in supporting our physical and mental health, saving money on fuel and parking, while helping to lower emissions.”
