Escapee, two others arrested following ‘brazen attack’

ACT Policing has arrested a 28-year-old man after he escaped from ACT Corrective Services custody this afternoon.

After an appeal for assistance, information received by police indicated the man was hiding in a house in Lyneham.

Specialist negotiators facilitated the safe surrender of the man at about 9pm after he was found hiding in the roof space.

Two females, believed to have been involved in the escape, were also arrested at the Lyneham house.

All three people have been transported to the ACT Watch House.

Investigations will continue to confirm the sequence of events which occurred today.

Earlier in the afternoon, at about 4.10pm, police received multiple calls regarding a white Jeep 4WD ramming an ACT Corrective Services transport vehicle on Oxley Street in Griffith.

The man, who was handcuffed at the time, left the scene with a female driver in the Jeep. The Jeep was later located alight on Nares Crescent, Forrest at about 4.50pm. The car fire was quickly extinguished.

Detective Acting Inspector Shane Scott said three Corrective Services officers were treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Services for minor injuries.

“The transport vehicle was followed from Hindmarsh Drive, and the corrective services officers were taking evasive action for theirs and the detainee’s safety,” Detective Acting Inspector Scott said.

“This was a brazen attack which could have had very serious consequences for the people in the both cars, and potentially other motorists.”

ACT Policing thanks the public for their cooperation and assistance during the operation.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
