Canberrans who want to create an age-friendly city and counter elder abuse should step forward.
Expressions of Interest are open for the 2021–23 Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing, which advises Emma Davidson, the Assistant Minister for Seniors, Veterans, Families and Community Services, on issues affecting older Canberrans.
“Older people are one of the fastest growing demographics in Canberra, making forums like the Council critical to the future of our city and community,” Ms Davidson said.
The Council provides critical links between the ACT Government and older Canberrans to develop and implement positive ageing policies; advance the status and interests of older people in the community; and consult with community organisations and individuals to identify concerns and propose action.
Expressions of interest are sought from members of the community with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. The current Council members come from health, law, community services, finance, housing, human rights, government and non-government sectors, the arts, aged care, and volunteering.
“I encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply so we can address the unique needs of our community, and create a more inclusive city for older Canberrans,” Ms Davidson said.
Outgoing member Elizabeth Samra served on the Council for two terms.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege … to work with a team of experts committed to promoting and protecting the rights of older people in Canberra,” she said.
Ms Samra is a solicitor at the Older Persons ACT Legal Service at Legal Aid ACT, and is a member of the ACT Elder Law and Succession Law Committee.
“ I am grateful to have had the opportunity to articulate some of the systemic issues and reform opportunities that arose in my professional practice, and to provide strategic advice to the Minister on ways the ACT Government could work towards ensuring older people live free from abuse, remain socially connected and have good access to services.”
